On January 8, 2024, the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Court remanded a 28-year-old man, Agboola Adebayo, in a correctional center for sexually assaulting a 9-month-old baby.
The Lagos State government brought charges against Adebayo, who did not provide a residential address, accusing him of defilement and causing grievous harm to the infant. Adebayo pleaded guilty to the charges.
Justice Rahman Oshodi subsequently ordered Adebayo’s remand in the correctional facility and scheduled the case for a hearing on March 25, 2024.
Earlier, state counsel Bukola Okeowo informed the court that Adebayo committed the offense on March 23, 2023, in the White Sand Area of Ijora, Badiya, Lagos. Okeowo asserted that the defendant engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with the baby, leading to the charge of defilement. The prosecutor also highlighted that Adebayo caused grievous harm to the child by inflicting serious injuries on her vagina.
The alleged offense is in violation of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State (2015) and is punishable by life imprisonment.
