The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a fraudulent fertility nurse, for deceiving over 45 women into believing she could help them get pregnant.
David-Agwa appeared before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar at the Federal High Court in Enugu, facing 45 counts of fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretenses, amounting to N28,278,600.
Her legal troubles began on August 28, 2024, when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) referred her to the EFCC for investigation after discovering she was falsely presenting herself as a medical fertility nurse.
Investigations revealed that she had forged documents, including a Nursing and Midwifery Council certificate and a degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to support her claims. The scheme successfully defrauded numerous unsuspecting women.
Among the charges, Count 41 states that in 2024, David-Agwa fraudulently obtained N1,600,000 from Okenwa Joy Chiamaka under the pretense of being a qualified fertility nurse. Count 24 similarly accuses her of taking N1,250,000 from Amarachi Okpala under the same false pretext.
David-Agwa pleaded not guilty to all charges. EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi requested a trial date and sought to remand her in Enugu State Correctional Facility. The defense attorney, G. C. Madubuegwu, mentioned a pending bail application filed on October 4, 2024, but Obasi opposed it, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations and the impact on the victims.
Justice Umar scheduled a ruling on the bail application for November 12, 2024, and David-Agwa was remanded in custody.
