The Lagos State Government is warning teachers and schools against utilizing the additional one-hour after official closing time for paid extra lessons, threatening strict action against violators.
Commissioning a block of classrooms and furniture at the Amuwo-Odofin Junior High School Complex, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, emphasized that the extra hour should be dedicated to extra-curricular activities, promoting students’ holistic development. He highlighted various social activities and clubs such as the Red Cross, Red Crescent, Boys Scout, Boys/Girls Brigade, STEM Club, Writing and Debate Club, among others, urging students’ participation in these endeavors.
Expressing disapproval of the prevalent practice where the first lesson is often compromised by teachers, Alli-Balogun warned of decisive measures against any teacher neglecting their duties.
“Perform your responsibilities within the designated time frame of 8am to 2pm. Leave the extra hour for reading or engaging in extra-curricular activities. We will not tolerate the use of this time for paid extra lessons in our schools. Education is free in Lagos State, and no fees should be charged for any service,” stated the Commissioner.
