An electrician, identified only as Sheni, was electrocuted while working on wiring connections at the UNILAG Estate in the Magodo area of Lagos State on New Year’s Day.

The tragic incident occurred around 5 pm when some residents of the estate, facing a power outage, called Sheni to assist with fixing the wiring. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous due to the nature of the event, described how Sheni had climbed the pole and was working on the wiring when the power was unexpectedly restored.

The resident explained that Sheni became motionless and was soon seen hanging from the electric pole. “He was called to fix the wiring, and as soon as he started, the power came back to the high-tension line, electrocuting him. We didn’t realize it until he stopped moving, and then we saw him slowly bend backward and dangle from the pole. We called his name, but he didn’t respond,” the source shared.

Another resident, Dapo, confirmed that the incident was reported to the police, and emergency services were alerted immediately. The scene was later attended by an anti-crime patrol team, fire service personnel, and Lagos State Ambulance Services.

“Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, Sheni’s body was eventually lowered from the pole and confirmed dead at the scene,” Dapo stated.

A police source confirmed that the body was taken to the morgue, and efforts were underway to locate Sheni’s relatives. An investigation into the circumstances of the tragic event is ongoing. “We are working to identify the deceased’s family and investigating the incident,” the police source said.
