The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct internet service providers in the country to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content with immediate effect.

The resolution was passed following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State. In presenting the motion, Tafoki highlighted the growing global issue of cyber pornography and argued that Nigeria, a “religious country” that prohibits nudity and pornography, had not taken adequate steps to address the issue.

Tafoki pointed out that several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws banning pornography. He also referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the harmful effects of pornography, including its potential to promote adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he said.

After a voice vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed that the motion was passed with overwhelming support. The House also directed the NCC to impose penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
