Crown Prince Leka II and Crown Princess Elia of Albania have publicly announced their decision to divorce after seven years of marriage.
The official statement, posted on Crown Prince Leka’s Instagram account, conveyed the couple’s mutual agreement to end their marriage, citing the loss of the institution’s function. The post emphasized the continued dedication to their 3-year-old daughter, Princess Geraldine, ensuring her happiness and safety.
While Crown Princess Elia initially released her own statement on Instagram, it has since been deleted. In her message, she expressed the challenging reality of the divorce, highlighting her belief in family values but acknowledging that sometimes separation becomes the only option. She thanked well-wishers for their support during these difficult months and wished them health and happiness in their families.
Crown Prince Leka II, who assumed the role of the head of the Albanian Royal Family after the passing of his father, King Leka I, in 2011, had married Elia, an actress and singer, in a lavish ceremony in the capital city of Tirana in October 2016.
