The Senate has established a six-member ad-hoc committee to investigate recent allegations against Senator Ashiru Oyelola, who represents Kwara South.
The committee will summon the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to clarify the accusations involving the senator. The NDLEA recently claimed to have raided Senator Ashiru’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, where illicit drugs were reportedly found. This incident followed Ashiru’s remarks during a Senate debate on October 15, in which he labeled the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised agency” while discussing a bill to create the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.
Senator Ashiru expressed concerns about the timing of the NDLEA’s allegations, describing them as “witch-hunting” in response to his Senate activities. He accused the agency of launching personal attacks to undermine the Senate’s ability to debate national issues. While the Senate President acknowledged doubts regarding the timing of the NDLEA’s claims, he avoided making any conclusions. The lawmakers will await the ad-hoc committee’s recommendations, expected within a week.
