Reports from local news sources indicate that a Zimbabwean man tragically set himself on fire due to suspicions of his wife’s alleged extramarital affair with their landlord.
The incident, confirmed by Member of Parliament for Silobela, Jonah Nyevera, involved the deceased, Onias Mangena, who harbored long-standing suspicions regarding his wife’s relationship with their landlord, Wilberforce Mukumba. On the day of the incident, Mangena engaged in a dispute with his wife, subsequently locking her and their children inside their rented home before procuring petrol from a nearby fuel station.
According to Nyevera, “On the day, he had an altercation with his wife and he locked her together with their minor kids in a house. He then went to a nearby garage to buy petrol which he intended to use to douse them in the house.”
Fortunately, alert neighbors heard the cries of Mangena’s wife and children and intervened promptly, rescuing them before alerting the authorities. Despite attempts to deceive law enforcement by claiming to be at home, Mangena ultimately succumbed to his plan.
Nyevera further lamented, “Since he had already purchased the petrol, he went into the house where he set himself ablaze. He was reduced to ashes.”
