The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has summoned the Chief Executives of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), along with the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Alhaji Sule Ahmed Abdulazeez. They have been called for a meeting in the coming week to address the worsening power supply situation in their respective regions.
Engineer B.U Mustapha, the Director of Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power, confirmed that the CEOs of these institutions have been invited to discuss the challenges facing electricity supply in their areas and to find lasting solutions.
Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser for Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister, quoted Adelabu emphasizing that the management of non-performing Distribution Companies (DISCOs) would also be questioned about their performance. He expressed concern over the persistent issues despite increased power supply from TCN.
The Ministry has been pressuring Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance performance, resulting in a recent increase in power generation to over 4000MW. However, despite efforts, power supply has not improved in some regions. Investigations revealed that some DISCOs were not fully utilizing the supplied power, while vandalism caused damage to power lines in Abuja, Benin, Port-Harcourt, and Ibadan regions.
Adelabu emphasized that all DISCOs must meet expected performance standards, warning that failure to do so could lead to severe consequences, including license revocation. He directed TCN to promptly initiate repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to enhance supply in affected regions.
