APC Solidifies Majority in Senate with 59 Senators After 2023 General Elections

The outcome of the 2023 general elections has firmly established the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the majority party in the Senate, with a total of 59 members. Initially holding 55 seats after the February election, the APC garnered an additional four seats through successful supplementary polls. The party’s victories came in Plateau Central, Yobe South, Sokoto North, and Sokoto East senatorial districts.

Following the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerges as the next prominent party in the Senate, securing 36 senators-elect. Before the supplementary elections, the PDP held 33 seats, but its representation increased by three as it triumphed in Sokoto South, Zamfara Central, and Kebbi North Senatorial districts.

In contrast, the five minor parties that participated in the elections failed to secure any seats during the supplementary polls. The Labour Party (LP) maintained its presence with eight senatorial districts, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) held two seats each. The Young Progressives Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) each retained one seat in the Senate.
