Bandits have abducted a mobile police officer in the Kampani community of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, while a soldier who was with him managed to escape.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening as the two security personnel were traveling from Zurak to Kampani when they were ambushed by the bandits.
Local sources told The Nation that the police officer and the soldier were part of a security team operating in the banditry-affected areas of Bangalala, Kampani, and Zurak. While the soldier managed to flee the scene, the police officer was taken by the bandits.
Sahapi Sambo, a youth leader in the area, confirmed the incident, stating that the two security personnel were on their way to join their colleagues in Kampani when they were attacked. He added that the communities in the area have been suffering from banditry for some time, which is why security forces are regularly patrolling to ensure the safety of residents.
Sambo also revealed that security forces, including soldiers, police officers, and vigilantes, launched a search operation, trailing the bandits to their hideout in an effort to rescue the abducted officer. The whereabouts of the kidnapped officer remain unknown.
