The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant interception in Sokoto State, seizing 15 trucks loaded with food items. This action is part of the NCS’s ongoing efforts to curb smuggling activities that contribute to the soaring prices of essential commodities across the nation.
Abubakar Chafe, the spokesperson for the NCS Sokoto Command, disclosed to reporters on Saturday, February 17, 2024, that the trucks were apprehended along the Gwadabawa-Illela road. He emphasized that the decision to intercept the vehicles was prompted by the large quantity of farm produce they were transporting. Currently, the trucks are under the custody of the command, and investigations are underway to determine the owners and intended destinations of the seized food items.
Chafe further elaborated that the operation was conducted jointly by personnel from the NCS Sokoto command, officers from the federal operation unit, and the intelligence unit of the service. This collaborative effort was necessitated by the pressing need to address the prevailing inflationary trends in food prices across the country.
