On Tuesday, April 2, the Federal Government announced the successful removal of 2 million Almajiri children from the streets, facilitating their enrollment in schools for both basic education and vocational training.
Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, made this disclosure during the inaugural quarterly Citizens and Stakeholders Engagement on Nigerian Education Sector Ministerial deliverables. He emphasized that addressing the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria has been a key priority for the current administration.
Mamman outlined the progress, stating:
“2,000,000 out-of-school Almajiri children have been enrolled in basic education programs along with Arabic literacy courses and vocational training. Additionally, guidelines and training manuals have been developed to implement inclusive basic education in Nigeria.”
“These initiatives have significantly boosted access, enrollment, and retention rates at both basic and tertiary education levels.”
Furthermore, the Minister highlighted that within the past six months, 70,674 teachers and non-teaching staff received training across various academic and non-academic institutions. Additionally, 2,122 students were granted Nigerian scholarship awards, and 2,889 students studying abroad received bursary awards and other scholarship opportunities.
