Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has responded with a surprising comment following his detainment in Dubai for another offense.

The athlete, who was stopped by police at Dubai Airport as he attempted to travel back to Russia, made headlines just weeks after being handed a six-year prison sentence in the Netherlands for drug smuggling. Promes, aged 32, was intercepted at border control and prevented from flying home with his Spartak Moscow teammates.

In February 14, Promes received a sentence for his involvement in smuggling over 1,350 kilograms of cocaine in January 2020 in Antwerp. Moreover, back in June the previous year, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin.

The Dutch Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed his detainment in Dubai for an offense there, prompting Promes to post a brief response on social media. Beneath an Instagram post about his detainment, Promes commented with a blue cap emoji.

Typically, a blue cap symbolizes ‘that’s cap,’ an American slang term for ‘that’s a lie.’ His arrest came two weeks after a Netherlands court sentenced him to six years for smuggling more than a ton of cocaine. Promes was believed to be detained at the airport while his current team, Spartak Moscow, was departing after a training camp.

A statement from the Dutch Prosecutor’s Office clarified the situation, stating that Promes was arrested for a local offense in Dubai and not for crimes committed in the Netherlands. They refrained from addressing whether they would request his extradition, stating that they have not initiated negotiations for it.

Promes was charged last May for his alleged involvement in smuggling cocaine intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020. The Public Prosecution Service officially found him guilty of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing the drugs.

Additionally, the stabbing incident, which involved injuring his cousin’s leg, took place at a family party in Abcoude. It occurred after Promes got into an argument over a stolen necklace. At the time, he was playing for Ajax in the Netherlands before moving to Spartak in February 2021.
