Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has expressed his readiness to support his party if it chooses to allocate its presidential ticket to the South East and nominates Peter Obi as its candidate. During a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku reiterated his stance, stating that he wouldn’t contest if the PDP decided to zone the presidency to the South or South-East, abiding by the party’s decision. He emphasized that his 2023 candidacy was pursued because the ticket was open to all party members. Regarding his meeting with Peter Obi, Atiku clarified it as a routine friendly interaction common among opposition party members, which he deemed beneficial for Nigeria’s democracy. He acknowledged the possibility of a merger among opposition parties to achieve common goals, dispelling concerns that the choice of presidential candidate might hinder merger discussions. Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to active politics, citing the need to address Nigeria’s challenges and improve the country’s condition. When asked about his 2027 presidential ambitions, he deferred to the decision of his party, stating that it would determine the course of action for the next election.
