The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning regarding an impending heat stress phenomenon likely to affect the country.

In a pictorial representation released by the agency, the map of Nigeria is marked with five distinct colors, each indicating the severity of the heat stress. NiMet cautioned regions including Kano, Gombe, Sokoto, Yobe, and approximately eight other northern states to take precautionary measures due to the extreme risk posed by the harsh weather conditions, which could result in sunstroke.

Additionally, residents of Kaduna, Kwara, the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and several other states were advised to make necessary preparations, as the heat stress might lead to muscle cramps, heatstroke, and heat exhaustion. Those residing in Ado-Ekiti, Akwa-Ibom, Ondo, and Osun were urged to exercise extreme caution, as similar weather conditions could prevail, posing similar risks.

NiMet specified that the forecast applies solely to Friday, 5th April. While expressing optimism that rainfall in some southern regions may temporarily alleviate the temperatures, the agency emphasized that heat stress results from various factors, including humidity, sunlight, wind (ventilation), hydration, clothing, and physical fitness.

Furthermore, the statement outlined preventive measures, advising individuals to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seek shelter in air-conditioned environments to cool off, avoid leaving children in enclosed, parked vehicles, wear hats and sunglasses when outdoors, and ensure infants are adequately ventilated and hydrated.

Additionally, NiMet recommended wearing light, breathable clothing to mitigate the effects of high temperatures and advised against engaging in strenuous physical activities during peak heat hours (typically between 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM), suggesting staying indoors whenever possible.
