Obafemi Awolowo University, located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has issued an official apology in response to a widely circulated video showing a male student being assaulted by one of its lecturers.
It has been reported that the incident involved a 200-level student named Gift, who mistakenly entered a lecture room where a lecturer, identified as Dr. Ariyo, was conducting a class, thinking it was his own. Upon realizing the error, the student attempted to leave the classroom but was called back by the lecturer. When the student used his phone, despite the lecturer’s request to turn it off, he was subjected to physical assault by the lecturer, who accused him of impersonation.
In a statement addressing the incident and extending apologies to the public, the university’s management stated:
“The authorities of OAU have been made aware of a video that has gained widespread attention, depicting an alleged assault by a lecturer on a second-year student.
“Deeply concerned by the contents of the video, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, has taken immediate action by forming a committee to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.
“What transpired in the viral video is not reflective of our institution’s character. We take pride in maintaining high standards of decency and respect, and we do not condone any form of abuse or mistreatment. We extend our sincere apologies to the public, especially our alumni, who may have been distressed by this incident.
“We urge our students to remain composed and focused on their regular academic pursuits. We assure all stakeholders that justice will be served, addressing the matter appropriately and in accordance with due process.”
