On Tuesday, January 23, primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) gathered for a protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja. The teachers, expressing discontent with the inadequate attention to their welfare by the FCT Area Councils, raised concerns about the non-payment of salary arrears, promotion arrears, and new minimum wage arrears dating back to 2019.
During the protest, the teachers called for a comprehensive review of the primary education structure in the country. They advocated for the direct involvement of the Federal Government in the administration of primary schools, bypassing local government councils.
Additionally, the teachers appealed to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter and address the issues affecting their remuneration and working conditions.
