Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has launched a lawsuit against Senate President Dr Ahmad Lawan and House Speaker Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila over the alleged excessive National Assembly budget of N228.1 billion.
SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, made the announcement, stating that the lawsuit was filed in response to the National Assembly’s increase of its 2023 budget from N169 billion proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari to N228.1 billion.
The lawsuit was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja and is seeking an order to reduce the National Assembly budget and an impact analysis prior to the release of funds.
SERAP argued that the increase in the National Assembly budget is unreasonable and unfair considering the country’s heavy debt crisis, and that reducing the budget would serve public interest.
