Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed skepticism about some reported kidnapping incidents in Abuja, suggesting that they may be fabricated.
Wike, accompanied by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, was summoned by senators to discuss security measures in the FCT. He assured the lawmakers of enhanced security and infrastructure development for FCT residents. According to Wike, the interaction with the senators was productive, and they agreed that security has notably improved in the FCT.
He stated, “I am glad they are all happy with what we have done, what we are going to be doing, and they provided some suggestions on ways forward. What is important is what the FCT should expect from now. I will say improved security and more infrastructure. You can see what is going on in the FCT. It has been turned into a construction site.”
Addressing the issue of reported kidnappings, Wike suggested that some incidents may be orchestrated by individuals with internal connections. He cited scenarios where household staff might collude to abduct their employer’s child, making it challenging for authorities to intervene effectively. He emphasized the government’s commitment to securing the release of kidnapped individuals.
Furthermore, Wike announced the arrest of the two most wanted kidnappers in the FCT, which has contributed to a decline in kidnapping incidents in Abuja. While acknowledging ongoing efforts to combat crime, he cautioned that eliminating criminal activities entirely is an ongoing challenge.
“We are not saying we have gotten to where we want to be, but we are doing a lot and people should acknowledge that what used to be is not what we are seeing now. We will continue to do our best to ensure that we provide the best to our people. We cannot give you the assurance that there will be no form of criminality, nobody can do that, as long as we are humans,” Wike concluded.
