The government of Kebbi State arranges mass weddings for 300 individuals who are either divorced or widowed.

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has orchestrated a mass wedding for 300 widows, divorcees, and indigents within the state. The event unfolded on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the Palace of the Emir of Gwandu in Birnin Kebbi, organized by the Nafisa Nasir Development Foundation (NANAS), founded by the Governor’s wife, Hajiya Nafisa Nasir Idris.

Represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Ankwe, the Governor announced the intention to conduct such mass weddings periodically, aiming to unite less privileged men and women in matrimony.

Governor Idris disclosed that his administration allocated a total of twenty-one million naira as dowry for the 300 brides from the 21 local government areas of the state, providing each bride with a dowry of N70,000. Additionally, the administration furnished the couples’ rooms and supplied them with foodstuffs to fortify their marital bonds.

Emphasizing the solemnization of the mass wedding after extensive consultations with Islamic Scholars, Governor Nasir Idris urged all couples to uphold the sanctity of marriage. He stressed the importance of grooms safeguarding the rights and privileges of their wives, while brides were advised to remain loyal and supportive to their husbands.

Dr. Nasir Idris lauded his wife, Hajiya Nafisa, for her dedicated efforts in realizing the unprecedented mass wedding in Kebbi State. The initiative aims to decrease the number of divorcees and facilitate marriages for the less privileged in the state.
