The Election Petitions Tribunal convened in Gombe State on Tuesday has invalidated the victory of the incumbent Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo.
Luggerewo, who represents Akko Central in the House, was recently appointed as the Zonal Vice Chairman for North-East in the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, and he also assumed the role of Chairman for the North-East Speakers Forum. Bashir Abdullahi from the Peoples Democratic Party had lodged a complaint against Luggerewo of the All Progressives Congress, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission, with regards to the annulment of results in polling units 001, 024, and 014 in Kumo East, which allegedly favored the APC.
In his verdict, Justice Michael Ugar asserted that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to cancel polling units 001, 024, and 014 in Kumo East was erroneous. Consequently, the tribunal has mandated a rerun within the next 30 days from the date of judgment in Kumo East 018 to determine the rightful winner between Luggerewo of the All Progressive Congress and Bashir Abdullahi of the Peoples Democratic Party.
