The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that its key presidential hopefuls — Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi — are working together with a shared objective of preventing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from retaining power in the 2027 general election.

The party made this known while unveiling 1ADC, a political movement aimed at bringing together members and supporters from diverse age groups, social classes and political interests as it prepares to challenge the APC in the next presidential race.

The initiative signals an early move by opposition figures to consolidate support on a single platform ahead of the 2027 election, which is already shaping up as a major contest against Tinubu and the ruling party.

Speaking during the launch of the movement, the National Coordinator of 1ADC, Lauretta Onochie, alongside former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, said the platform was created to foster unity within the party.

“We are here to inform the world, the state and our political leaders that we have come together to be united as one ADC,” Onochie said.

She explained that the platform would enable supporters of Obi, Atiku and Amaechi to work together as a unified force in confronting the APC in the 2027 election.

“Because Nigerians are asking an important question as to whether political parties can come together and unite, today we are here to say it is possible and we are taking that lead,” she added.

Onochie acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in politics but stressed that the party’s overall objective must take priority over individual ambitions.

“We will unite after the primaries, we will heal the wounds and we will not encourage anti-party activities. We will reach the grassroots, we will reach the poor and the young, and we will be a party for everyone. We will be strong, disciplined and united,” she said.

She noted that the movement was also designed to reduce tensions among party leaders and aspirants while mobilising Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

Also speaking, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu said adopting the party as a coalition platform would give Nigerians the opportunity to reclaim their country.

“We say we don’t want to continue complaining. It is not about who is the national chairman or national secretary. The leadership of the ADC has been very deliberate. They don’t want to stand on anybody’s face. They want Nigerian citizens to take over the party,” Nwosu said.

He urged Nigerians to take action to prevent the country from slipping into deeper crisis after the 2027 elections.

Nwosu also described the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, as a “military tactician” who would not be intimidated by any political force.

According to him, the party’s ongoing digital membership registration has attracted strong interest across the country. He added that the ADC is evolving from a party dominated by politicians into a citizens-driven platform aimed at promoting greater political unity in Nigeria.
