The Ayangburen Palace in Ikorodu community has issued a warning to women, advising them to remain indoors during the upcoming traditional ‘Oro’ festival slated for May 16, 2024, both in the daytime and nighttime.
According to a report by Punch, a letter issued by the Ayangburen Palace and signed by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotob, was addressed to the Medical Director of the Ikorodu General Hospital, cautioning females in the community to stay indoors during the festival.
The letter, titled ‘Notification of Magbo (Oro) Festival 2024,’ emphasized the tradition’s protocol, advising all females to remain in their homes and avoid moving around the town during the Oro festival. The palace reminded the recipient that their organization falls within the Oro traditional jurisdictions and urged adherence to the town’s customs.
The Oro festival, a significant celebration in the Yoruba tradition, is primarily observed by male descendants. It typically features a daytime procession and the reverberation of high-pitched sounds throughout the community. It is customary for females not to be present during the ritual rites of the festival.
