Human rights activists and officers from the Abia State Police Command collaborated to rescue an 11-year-old girl from alleged abuse by her ‘uncle’ in Aba. The Abia State Director of Behind Bars Initiative, Ochiegbu Marvelous, revealed the incident on Saturday, May 18, 2024, stating that the girl worked as a maid for the suspect despite not being related. Marvelous recounted the jubilation among residents during the rescue but noted the victim’s tearful insistence that her bruises were from an accident, claiming the uncle had treated her well. Despite separating them, the girl expressed a desire to stay with the uncle, while he maintained it was an accident. Marvelous expressed discomfort with the situation, suspecting supernatural influence. The girl, from Amichi in Nnewi, Anambra State, would be returned to her parents. Marvelous called for a rehabilitation center for victims and thanked his team, the police, and Officer Uche for their assistance. He commended Officer Uche’s dedication, even funding a tricycle to aid in the rescue, and expressed gratitude to his boss, Harrison Gwamnishu, and the Behind Bars Initiative team, reaffirming their commitment to serving humanity.
