A Magistrates’ Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of 32-year-old Sunday Abilewa at Olokuta Correctional Centre for the alleged murder of his 68-year-old father.

Abilewa was arrested by officers from the Ondo State Police Command and charged with murder.

According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, the incident occurred on December 31, 2024, at around 5:00 pm in Eberi quarters, Isua Akoko, Ondo State. Abilewa allegedly strangled his father, Abu Abilewa, to death after a dispute over the purchase of a new motorcycle.

Suleiman explained that the defendant had asked his father to buy him a new motorcycle, but when the request was refused, an argument ensued. In the heat of the argument, Abilewa allegedly grabbed his father’s neck, leading to his death. Despite the efforts of the defendant’s mother to intervene, she was unable to stop him as he was reportedly under the influence of hard drugs.

The prosecutor stated that the offence violated Section 316 and was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol.II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The prosecutor requested the court to remand the defendant in custody pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Magistrate Mrs. F.A. Akinboboye, who did not allow the defendant to enter a plea, agreed to the remand order and adjourned the case until February 25, 2025, for further mention.
