Iyabo Obasanjo, a former senator who represented Ogun Central, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), barely two months after losing the party’s governorship ticket in Ogun State.

Iyabo, the eldest daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, announced her resignation in a letter dated May 31 and addressed to Yemi Sanusi, chairman of the APC in Ogun State.

In the letter, she cited what she described as persistent disrespect from the party leadership and alleged that agreements reached during the governorship selection process were not honoured by Solomon Adeola, the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Iyabo joined the APC in February and subsequently declared her intention to contest the governorship race. However, she later stepped down following the party’s adoption of a consensus arrangement to select its candidate.

Despite withdrawing from the contest, she expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the process, alleging that some of her supporters were mistreated and prevented from gaining access to the venue where the consensus meeting was held.

Her resignation marks a fresh development in Ogun State politics ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
