A woman opened fire on her husband after he insisted on divorce, following her two-hour drive in an attempt to salvage their marriage.
Christina Pasqualetto, 62, stands accused of shooting her 80-year-old husband, Jon, on September 20. In her booking photo after her arrest for Jon’s attempted murder, she wore a wide, eerie grin despite sporting two black eyes.
The incident occurred when Pasqualetto traveled from their Gilbert home to their second residence in Prescott, where her estranged spouse had relocated and changed the locks, according to Prescott police.
She reportedly told law enforcement that she vehemently opposed the idea of divorce and engaged in a heated argument with her husband upon confronting him in his bedroom.
“When he affirmed his desire for a divorce and remained resolute in his decision, she produced a handgun and shot him while he remained in bed,” police stated.
Jon managed to push her down, causing the firearm to slip from her grasp, and he attempted to flee the house. During this struggle, he used his hands and elbows to fend off his wife, leaving her badly bruised.
Ultimately, Jon managed to escape to a neighbor’s house and dialed 911. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his wrist and was later transported to a Phoenix-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation revealed that the couple was already in the midst of a divorce and had been living apart for several months. Jon also informed the police that his estranged wife had stolen checks and forged a $10,000 check, which she had cashed about a week prior.
During an interview with investigators, Christina admitted to the forgery and theft. She has been incarcerated in Yavapai County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, forgery, and theft. As of Tuesday, September 26, she remained in custody.
