Dr. Dre has officially joined the ranks of billionaires.

On March 10, Forbes released its updated World’s Richest People list, with the legendary music producer appearing for the first time with an estimated net worth of $1 billion, largely earned through his music career and his headphone brand empire.

The new ranking places Dr. Dre as the 3,332nd richest person in the world, tying him with fellow music star Beyoncé. The milestone also makes him the second-richest hip-hop artist, behind Jay-Z, and one of only six musicians on the list.

Dre’s official billionaire status comes 12 years after he famously declared himself hip-hop’s first billionaire following the sale of Beats Electronics to Apple for $3 billion in 2014. After the deal was completed, he reportedly earned about $500 million, making him the richest hip-hop artist at the time, though still short of billionaire status.

His wealth fluctuated over the years, with reports estimating his net worth at around $400 million in 2022. In 2023, he sold part of his music assets to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group for about $250 million. The deal included two of his solo albums, his share of royalties from N.W.A, producer royalties, and the writer’s share of songs where he did not own publishing, including tracks from his classic album The Chronic, according to Billboard.

Beyond music, Dre has continued to build his fortune through investments and real estate. Most recently, he sold his home in Malibu, California for $16.5 million, further boosting his wealth.
