Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has stated that his son, Bello El-Rufai, remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) out of personal conviction, despite his own criticisms of the ruling party.
Bello currently serves as the representative for Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives at the National Assembly of Nigeria.
El-Rufai made the clarification during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, shortly after alleging that operatives of the Department of State Services attempted to detain him at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon his return from Egypt.
Commenting on his son’s political affiliation, El-Rufai—who is now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—said Bello is mature enough to make independent political choices.
“My son Bello was elected under the platform of the APC, and his electorate seems satisfied with his performance. He is over 30 years old and capable of making his own choices. Politics is about personal preference,” he said, adding that his son’s continued APC membership does not contradict his own opposition stance.
“If he chooses to remain in the APC without engaging in any wrongdoing, based on the values we instilled in him, then Alhamdulillah,” El-Rufai concluded.
