Five individuals were arraigned on Thursday before a Magistrate Court in Ago-Iwoye, located in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, for allegedly assaulting a secondary school teacher, Mr. Akeem Soyingbe, of Mamu Community Comprehensive High School, Ago-Iwoye.

The defendants—Sunday Matthew (19), Salisu Sulaiman (32), Ojenugba Philips (34), Sunday Abu (45), and Joel Sunday (20)—appeared before Magistrate Mrs. O. F. Adeduntan and pleaded not guilty to the six charges brought against them.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Abolarinwa Wasiu, told the court that the alleged assault occurred on January 29 at Mamu Community Comprehensive High School, Ago-Iwoye. He explained that the defendants conspired to assault Mr. Soyingbe, accusing him of deliberately failing Sunday Matthew, an SS1 student, which led to his repeating the class.

According to the prosecutor, the defendants entered the school premises on motorcycles and physically attacked Mr. Soyingbe, blaming him for Matthew’s academic failure. The prosecutor further noted that the assault caused fear and anxiety among students, leading to a drop in school attendance the following day.

Magistrate Adeduntan granted the defendants bail in the amount of N500,000 each, with two sureties in like sum. The sureties were required to provide proof of two years’ tax payment to the Ogun State Government.

The case was adjourned to February 27 for further hearing.
