Manuel Neuer, the legendary Germany goalkeeper and 2014 World Cup winner, has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 38.
The Bayern Munich veteran, who revolutionized the role of the modern “sweeper-keeper,” played 124 matches for Germany, captaining his country 61 times.
Neuer’s illustrious international career concluded with his final appearance in the quarter-final loss to Spain at Euro 2024. Despite being tempted to continue until the 2026 World Cup, Neuer revealed on social media that he was “convinced that now is the right time to take this step.”
Neuer’s performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper, cemented his place as one of the greatest in the sport’s history. Known for his ability to venture far from the penalty box to intercept attacks and his exceptional footwork, Neuer set a new standard for goalkeepers worldwide.
In his announcement, Neuer shared that the decision came after discussions with his family and a conversation with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann. He expressed his intention to “concentrate fully” on his club career with Bayern Munich, where he has won two Champions League titles and 11 Bundesliga championships. This season’s Champions League final is set to take place at Munich’s Allianz Arena, offering Neuer a chance to end the season on a high note.
Neuer’s career faced a significant challenge after he broke his leg in a skiing accident in December 2022, which sidelined him for much of the 2023 season. However, he made a triumphant return to the Germany squad just in time for Euro 2024, where he once again took up the mantle of first-choice goalkeeper.
Reflecting on his career, Neuer said, “It was a great time which shaped me and of which I am very proud. Winning the World Cup title in 2014 and the special atmosphere during the European Championship at home this year are highlights for which I am extremely grateful.”
Neuer’s retirement from international football follows similar announcements by fellow 2014 World Cup winners Thomas Müller and Toni Kroos, as well as current Germany captain Ilkay Gündoğan. With Neuer stepping down, the stage is set for long-time back-up Marc-André ter Stegen of Barcelona to become Germany’s new number one goalkeeper.
Neuer’s departure marks the end of an era for Germany’s national team, closing the chapter on one of the most influential goalkeeping careers in football history.
