The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent fare increase across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) services, covering both Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard routes.
In a statement issued on February 23, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the approval following appeals from regulated public transport operators who expressed concerns about the sustainability of operations amid mounting economic pressures.
The government explained that the adjustment is intended to ease the strain caused by persistent economic challenges affecting the public transport sector.
According to the statement, the new fare regime will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.
Officials noted that the review aligns with the existing annual fare adjustment framework and cited ongoing inflationary pressures as a key factor. Nigeria’s inflation rate closed 2025 at 15.2 per cent, based on figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The statement added that Bus Operating Companies have continued to face escalating operational costs, including higher spending on vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and staff wages, particularly after the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
