Lionel Scaloni has suggested that the 2026 World Cup may mark Lionel Messi’s final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Argentina’s international friendly against Zambia, Scaloni noted that while Messi, now 38, has not confirmed his plans for the tournament, he remains an important part of the team, having contributed significantly during the qualification campaign.
The coach stressed that his priority is to ensure Messi is present and able to enjoy what could be his last World Cup.
“The important thing is that he comes and enjoys being at a World Cup—which, in theory, could be his last,” Scaloni said. “We want him to enjoy it, because later on, you truly miss playing in events like these.”
He also indicated that most of Argentina’s regular players are expected to feature in upcoming matches, which will serve as a final assessment before possible adjustments to the squad.
“After that, we may make some changes to give younger players a chance, but for now, the plan is to stick with our core lineup,” he added.
