My husband is a figurehead. I feed our five children and pay their fees – Divorce-seeking woman tells Oyo court

A woman, Abiodun, has filed a suit before the Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to her husband, Damilola, over allegations of irresponsibility, troublesome behaviour, and physical abuse.

Abiodun described her husband as merely a figurehead in the home rather than a supportive partner. She told the court that although he constantly claimed to be the head of the household, he failed to take on any of the responsibilities that came with that role.

According to her, Damilola consistently neglected his duties toward her and their five children, leaving her to shoulder the burden alone. She stated that she has been solely responsible for feeding the family and paying the children’s school fees.

She further alleged that her husband’s behaviour deprived her of peace of mind, despite the heavy responsibilities she already carried. Instead of appreciation, she said she was subjected to frequent beatings, which she claimed occurred almost daily.

Abiodun told the court she could no longer continue in the marriage and wished to move on with her life. She therefore requested that the court dissolve the union and grant her custody of their five children. She also appealed to the court to compel her husband to take responsibility for the children’s welfare, including their feeding, education, and healthcare.

In his response, Damilola agreed that both parties should go their separate ways.

Speaking further, Abiodun explained that her husband did not pay her bride price and that they began living together shortly after meeting. She reiterated that he neglected the family’s needs and left her to provide for them.

She added that despite her efforts to keep the home running, she found no relief, as her husband remained troublesome and abusive. She alleged that he eventually forced her out of the house in August of the previous year.

Reaffirming her request, Abiodun urged the court to dissolve the marriage, grant her custody of the children, and order her husband to contribute to their upbringing. She also sought a restraining order to prevent him from interfering in her private life.

The court’s president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case until April 20 for further hearing.
