The government of Niger Republic has officially reopened the Konni border for operations today, March 22.
This development comes one week after the Nigerian Customs Service, in accordance with the directives of the Presidency, opened the Illela land border between Nigeria and Niger Republic. The Konni border was declared open precisely at noon on Friday.
Recall that recently, the Nigeria Customs Service, in compliance with the federal government’s directives, reopened all land and air borders across northern states and the country. This included the reopening of the Konni-Illela border in Sokoto State to facilitate lawful trade between the two countries.
Following the coup on July 26, 2023, members of the Economic Community of West African States had closed their borders with Niger and imposed sanctions. However, these sanctions were lifted in February of this year.
