Nigeria’s Power Generation Increased by 30% in 2024 – Minister Adebayo Adelabu
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that the country’s power generation rose by approximately 30% in 2024.
Adelabu made the statement during his ministry’s 2025 budget defense before the Senate Committee on Power at the National Assembly on Monday, January 13.
The Minister explained that when he took over the Ministry of Power in 2023, the country’s average power generation was 4,100 megawatts. However, by the end of 2024, this had increased to a peak of 5,528 megawatts.
“The increase in power generation is largely due to the addition of a new hydroelectric power dam, Zungeru, which contributed 700 megawatts. We also saw significant improvements in generation from existing power plants,” Adelabu said.
He acknowledged that while the ministry’s target for power generation was 6,000 megawatts, challenges in the latter part of 2024, including grid collapses, led to a slight shortfall in meeting that goal.
