The Ogun State police command has arrested one Akintoye Waris for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a Savannah he-goat, valued at N200,000, for his child’s naming ceremony.
Confirming the arrest, the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, stated that Waris was apprehended on January 2, 2025, in the Odeda Area of the state, alongside his accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf. According to Odutola, the suspects allegedly targeted a local farm in the area to steal the goat, after ensuring that the farm owner, identified only as Mark, had taken his cattle out for grazing on December 25.
Odutola explained that the owner discovered one of his goats was missing upon returning and initiated a search within the community. During the search, some villagers reported seeing the suspects with the missing goat on a motorcycle, heading towards Olodo town.
Acting on the information, police detectives were promptly deployed, leading to the arrest of the suspects in the early hours of January 2, 2025.
“During questioning, the suspects admitted to the crime, detailing how they stole, transported, and later slaughtered the he-goat on December 27, 2024. They revealed that the goat was used to prepare food for the naming ceremony of Akintoye Waris’s daughter, which took place in Olodo,” Odutola said.
The suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing further investigation at the Odeda Divisional Crime Branch.
Odutola reassured residents that the suspects would face prosecution once the investigation is completed and assured that any updates on the case would be communicated in due course.
