Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the reported tear-gassing of Nigerians who were peacefully calling for free, fair and credible elections.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Obi voiced concern over what he described as the suppression of citizens exercising their democratic rights. He said it was disturbing that some individuals who once presented themselves as champions of democracy are now engaging in actions that appear to undermine it.
According to him, such developments threaten public trust and weaken the foundations of good governance.
Obi urged Nigerians to stay vigilant and united in safeguarding the nation’s democratic process. He renewed his call for greater transparency in elections, particularly the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of results directly from polling units to curb manipulation and rebuild confidence in the system.
He concluded by encouraging citizens to remain hopeful and steadfast in their commitment to building a country rooted in justice, accountability and credible elections, reiterating his belief that “a New Nigeria is Possible.”
In a strongly worded remark, Obi added that the country risks further damaging its reputation if peaceful citizens continue to face force for demanding electoral integrity.
