Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 election, has criticized the economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, suggesting that they primarily benefit bankers, government officials, and the president’s allies.

Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu’s government has implemented reforms such as the removal of the fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira. However, Rhodes-Vivour, also known as GRV, argues that the majority of Nigerians are struggling while a select few prosper.

“The people are facing unparalleled hardship. Over 70% of their income is now spent on transportation and food,” he said during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday. “They haven’t even started thinking about how they will afford housing.”

He further criticized the government for fostering a culture of waste and extravagance, which he believes is disconnected from the severe economic challenges facing the country. “The only people who seem to be benefiting from these reforms are perhaps the bankers, government officials, and the President’s friends. How many Nigerians can truly say they are benefiting from these reforms?” he questioned.
