Suspected transformer vandal electrocuted in Ondo community

A suspected vandal was electrocuted to death while allegedly attempting to steal components from a power transformer in the Omifon community of Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State.

Community sources said the unidentified man was reportedly tampering with the armored cable connected to the transformer when the incident occurred.

A resident who spoke to Hope Newspaper on Sunday, March 1, confirmed that the incident happened last Wednesday and noted that there was an active power supply at the time.

“The suspect was electrocuted in the process, as the high-voltage current from the installation proved fatal. He died instantly,” the source said.

Officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) were reportedly notified and later arrived at the scene to evacuate the body.

The incident has generated concern among residents, many of whom described it as tragic and disturbing. They also pointed out that vandalism of electricity infrastructure remains a recurring problem in some communities, often leading to outages and significant damage to public property.
