The Senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students over offences ranging from cult-related activities and examination malpractice to drug possession and threats to life.

The decision was reached during the institution’s 191st Regular Senate Meeting after deliberations on a report submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee.

Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

According to the statement, the affected students were found guilty of serious misconduct, including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded to the university’s admission portal, as well as possession and use of hard drugs.

The Senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates earlier awarded to 15 former students who repeatedly failed to appear before the disciplinary committee despite several invitations.

Meanwhile, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after investigations, while 33 others were issued warnings for offences such as hostel racketeering, conspiracy, and fighting.

Commenting on the development, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, stressed that the institution would not lower its standards or tolerate actions that threaten academic integrity and campus safety.

He reaffirmed that the university remains committed to enforcing discipline while guiding students toward responsible citizenship and academic excellence.

Fawehinmi added that the institution would continue to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for both students and staff, alongside strengthening student engagement, counselling, and orientation programmes to curb future misconduct.

The action reflects the university management’s intensified efforts to address indiscipline, amid rising concerns about cultism, examination fraud, and other criminal activities in tertiary institutions nationwide.
