Suspected vandals attempted to set fire to an INEC facility in Abuja just days ahead of the FCT Councils’ elections scheduled for February 21.
The targeted building, belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is currently undergoing renovation. The incident occurred on February 19.
Around 7:30 a.m., officers at the Abaji Police Division received a report that unidentified individuals were trying to ignite the structure. A patrol team swiftly responded to the scene and successfully put out the fire.
Police said preliminary findings from an on-the-spot assessment suggest possible foul play, noting that the building remains under renovation and the contractor has yet to complete the project.
Authorities emphasized that the affected structure is not in active use and is separate from the main INEC office, which remains safe and secure.
They added that armed personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order, assuring the public that the situation is under close surveillance.
