Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the strongest and most qualified candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to field in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television on Friday, August 8, Lamido said the PDP should make strategic efforts to bring Jonathan back into the party’s fold, emphasizing that no current southern PDP figure matches Jonathan’s experience and leadership credentials.

“Jonathan is a competent, experienced leader who has governed this country and understands how to work with people,” Lamido said. “He is most welcome, very qualified, and to me, the best option we have in the PDP right now.”

The former governor stressed that if the PDP is zoning the presidency to the South, Jonathan stands out as the most viable and unifying figure within the party. “With all due respect to other members, I don’t see anyone in the PDP today who can match Jonathan in terms of leadership, governance experience, and willingness to build partnerships,” he added.

Lamido also took a hard stance against party members who undermined the PDP during the 2023 general elections. He called for the expulsion of key figures including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; and former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

“All those who openly campaigned against the PDP in 2023 and are now aligning with the APC for 2027 — the Wikes, the Ortoms, the Ikpeazus — should be sacked from the party,” he stated.

Lamido’s comments come amid renewed efforts within the PDP to woo Jonathan back into the party’s leadership equation ahead of the 2027 race.
