The electronic gates (e-gates) installed at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja underwent a test run on Friday, April 19, by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo, accompanied by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, and Kemi Nanna Nandap, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, along with other top government officials, announced that the project is now 99 percent complete. He mentioned that the e-gates would commence operational use by next week. These e-gates are expected to be deployed in Lagos, Enugu, Kano, and Port-Harcourt as well, aiming to eliminate human interfaces, reduce bureaucracy, and streamline passenger movements in and out of the country.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated, “With this significant infrastructure, we believe that no unwanted persons or persons of interest can find their way into Nigeria. Our airport security and domain are guaranteed.” He highlighted that the initiative aligns with President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the need to transform and simplify passenger movements.
He commended the Minister of Aviation, Hon Festus Keyamo (SAN), and other stakeholders for their collaborative efforts in making this transformation possible.
