Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has issued a stern warning concerning the political turmoil unfolding in Rivers state.
George emphasized that Rivers state is firmly rooted in the PDP, cautioning against the actions of lawmakers attempting to impeach the Governor, whom he described as being under external influence. He asserted that the defection of PDP lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) automatically renders them ineligible to threaten Governor Fubara.
In a statement released on Friday, May 10, George conveyed his concerns, stating, “Rivers people are staunch supporters of the PDP. Those advocating for the governor’s impeachment are being manipulated by external forces. Such actions must cease because any unrest in Rivers state could jeopardize our democratic process.”
Highlighting historical precedents, George urged restraint, referencing the infamous “Operation Wetie” which sparked widespread violence and ultimately led to the downfall of the First Republic in 1966. He called upon the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP to take decisive action to quell the crisis before it escalates further.
“All parties involved in the Rivers crisis must refrain from actions that could incite violence or disrupt law and order in our nation. The BoT members should exercise their elder statesmanship and intervene promptly to prevent further escalation. It is imperative for all stakeholders to prioritize the greater good of Nigeria, regardless of political affiliations. Let us refrain from making provocative statements that exacerbate tensions in Rivers state,” George urged.
