Akande: No Indication That Osinbajo Has Left Politics

Mr. Laolu Akande, spokesperson for former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has dismissed speculation that Osinbajo has left politics or resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akande made the clarification during an interview with journalists on Sunday in Lagos.

Since leaving office in 2023, Osinbajo has kept a relatively low political profile, leading to rumors about his potential disengagement from both the APC and active politics. His absence from several political events has fueled doubts about his continued affiliation with the ruling party.

Osinbajo, who contested the APC presidential primary in 2022 but lost to President Bola Tinubu, had previously served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 under Tinubu’s governorship.

Some analysts have speculated that Osinbajo’s reduced political visibility is linked to his primary loss, while others suggest his focus may have shifted due to his recent appointment as Global Advisor for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).

In response to these speculations, Akande emphasized that Osinbajo has never indicated to him that he is leaving politics, reaffirming that the former Vice President remains a member of the APC. He also confirmed that Osinbajo would attend any APC events that require his participation.

“I don’t want to speak for him, but there is no reason to believe he is no longer in the APC. He is still a member, and if he gets an invitation to the caucus, he will be there,” Akande said. “I don’t know about him leaving the party.”
