Nigerian Islamic cleric and counselor Bello Muhammed Tahir (BMT) has strongly criticized Muslim first wives who perceive potential second wives as “husband snatchers,” calling such views “sickening and unacceptable.”
In a Facebook post on Monday, July 21, the cleric emphasized that being a first wife does not grant ownership over a husband.
“It is sickening and very unpalatable how Muslim first wives think that a potential second wife is a husband snatcher,” he wrote.
He questioned the origin of this misguided belief, asking, “From where did you get this unGodly conception? How does being the first wife make the man your property so that no other woman can be interested in him?”
BMT expressed disappointment that such thinking persists among Muslims, noting, “Just how? To say that this is coming from Muslims is dissatisfying. Even Christians don’t think this way anymore.”
He concluded with a cautionary message: “I hope Allāh doesn’t test you one day where the tables turn and you find yourself at the mercy of another.”
The cleric called for self-reflection and guidance, urging, “Some of us really need to be guided and learn how to conduct ourselves. Allahumma.”
