A 39-year-old woman has been arrested in Mpumalanga, South Africa, after she was allegedly found in possession of human tissue, police confirmed on Thursday, September 18.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the suspect, Rose Mnisi — a cleaner at a local hospital — was taken into custody following reports that she had been selling placentas, the organ formed during pregnancy that connects mother and baby.

“Police received a tip-off about a woman attempting to sell human placentas. Acting on the information and suspect description, officers located a woman carrying a plastic bag along Voortrekker Street in Lydenburg,” said Mdhluli.

Upon being questioned, Mnisi reportedly admitted to working in the maternity ward and was found to be in possession of human tissue.

She was arrested and charged with illegal possession of human tissue.

Mnisi has since appeared in the Mashishing District Court. Her case has been postponed to September 25 for a formal bail application.
