Tension gripped Zaki-Biam, in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, on Monday, September 29, 2025, after unidentified gunmen shot and killed a repentant bandit, Kyoga Joka, in the town’s main market.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the bustling marketplace and opened fire on Joka, who was reportedly serving as a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) in Ukum. He died on the spot, triggering chaos as traders and shoppers fled for safety.

The killing has sparked fear and uncertainty in the community, with residents calling on security agencies to respond swiftly. Authorities have since invited several individuals for questioning as part of ongoing investigations.

Local sources suggest that Joka’s murder may be linked to long-standing rivalries and threats that had been circulating in the area in recent weeks. Reports also indicate that the suspects were seen meeting shortly before the attack.
